The remaining 7.5 percent is often made of copper or may be a mixture of other alloys.

| A: | Sterling silver jewelry is best kept in tarnish-resistant silver cloths, or bags, and in a cool dry place. Airtight storage is helpful to reduce tarnishing tendencies, as well. If left in the open, sterling will develop a natural patina. Some prefer the darkened look, but if you prefer the bright silver look, simply wipe the piece with a silver polishing cloth to restore its luster.
|
| A: | The most effective way to clean sterling silver is to use a silver polishing cloth. Avoid all abrasive cleaners, (such as toothpaste) as silver is soft and may scratch. Most liquid silver cleaners may reduce the luster of the piece in time, especially if the sterling is rhodium-plated.
